Love your scars; they have made you beautiful. Love your flaws; they are what make you unique. You are beautiful beyond measure, and you deserve to feel that way. The Courage to Hope is my story of how I overcame. My goal in writing it was not only to share my struggles with an eating disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, self-injury, and rape but also to provide tangible pieces of advice on how to overcome such obstacles. Everyone has a story. This is mine.

I suffered from anorexia and bulimia nervosa for fifteen years. Fifteen long years. I never discuss numbers in this book, because I believe that takes away from the pain a person suffering from an eating disorder is in. Eating disorders are not about pounds lost or a number on the scale; they are, at very minimum, a way of coping.

I begin each chapter with an excerpt from my journal. These are dated and exact words that I wrote in the midst of my struggles. I follow the journal entry with a written snapshot of what was happening in my life at that time. Please be aware that the contents can be triggering. I discuss openly and honestly three difficult subjects: eating disorder, self-injury, and rape. If you are in the midst of these struggles, please read with caution. I never want to trigger anyone.

Each snapshot of my life is followed by the tangible pieces of advice I would like you to take away and focus on—the steps I took that brought me from that dark place to the place I am at today. This is what I want you to hear. I’ve also interwoven photography throughout these pages to visually capture the raw feelings I was experiencing during this time in my life.

Thank you for reading and sharing in my story. I hope you find the Courage to Hope.

Hardcover copy with vibrant imagery throughout.
